Medical Laboratory Professionals are Health System Heroes

Super Heroes undoubtedly display extraordinary powers or abilities like superhuman strength, the ability to fly, enhanced senses, and the projection of energy bolts. Superman and Batman are great examples and represent the best attributes of humanity as the ultimate forces for good imaginable. Accumen sees super heroes differently and is joining other industry organizations in celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.

Today’s “new heroes” wear lab coats instead of capes and “bleed cool” as a medical laboratory professional. Armed with a selfless attitude, compassionate demeanor, and a desire to do the right thing, they produce results that drive more than 70% of all medical decisions and comprise more than 80% of a patient’s electronic health record. With tubes of blood and tissue, they are heroes who do much more than simply resulting a test. Medical laboratory professionals execute initiatives to increase efficiency and patient safety, reduce cost, drive better patient care through quality improvement, and avoid errors across health systems nationwide.

In the healthcare continuum, medical laboratory professionals work behind the scenes and have a great opportunity to significantly improve both clinical and financial outcomes for a hospital or health system. Today’s medical laboratory professional uses their knowledge as power to benchmark cost and productivity, optimize service lines, maximize test menu optimization and increase patient safety while making sure that they deliver the right results for the right patient at the right time.

Lab professionals have the best potential to use power to enhance key relationships with clinical and organizational partners alike.  The strategic opportunity exists in the lab to deliver improved outcomes for better patient care, population health management and enhanced financial performance.  Integration of Comprehensive Patient Blood Management (cPBM) and development of clinical laboratory outreach programs gives medical lab professionals an opportunity to improve connections to a critical physician referral base including support for chronic disease management and timely test results.

Medical laboratory professionals rely on people, process and technology as their bolts of energy to create real, meaningful, and measurable results.  The role of these professionals is beyond super human as they drive higher quality, better service and ultimately better patient care. As Accumen celebrates Medical Laboratory Professionals Week 2017, we pause to say “thank you” to the super heroes who deliver real results for better healthcare!
